Well, this subject is all about Social Networking and Online Communities and I think I am actually beginning to catch on. I could say I am hooked. I have used MSN for years, ICQ as well and have found them great for keeping in touch with friends and their families but really not much more.
I have also spent many hours(much to my husband’s dismay!) accessing , chat rooms, mailing lists, emailing etc. as I have followed a passion of mine - genealogy. Strange, though that, previously, I never really saw them as online communities or thought of them in terms of the “learning” they were providing. My list would be a couple of kms long, if I were to write down all the things I have learned from those online communities!!
Even now, I see MSN, in a new light.
During 2006, I studied with CSU to complete a GradCert in ICT Education and students “added” each other to their MSN contact list. I have been in contact with a few of them over the last couple of years and there are two who are now also completing the GradDip Course (they know who theyare!).
The network we set up 3 years ago is proving to be invaluable and I am beginning to see its true value. Over the last couple of weeks we have chatted, previewed files, discussed, suggested, shared some resources and ideas and talked about our work environments and situations. It has already been social, collegial, professional, supportive, constructive, collaborative - and we didn’t even realise it, it just happened.
The tool was there, we needed it, we’ve used it and used it well. I know I have learned lots already, and the journey is only really beginning!!
