    Social Networking Taxonomy.
    What is Folksonomy?

Although I understood the term Taxonomy- the classification or ordering of things, the term Folksonomy was certainly something new to me. Before I started to look for enlightenment on its meaning, I began to link it with other similar words i.e. Folktale, Folklaw or just plain Folk. Of course, they have something to do with people and I presumed that Folksonomy would be similar.

Seeing Taxonomy and Folksonomy so close together in the outlining of this exercise made me think that perhaps Folksonomy had something to do with people working to order information.

Further investigation - my first stop was Wikipedia - helped. Folksonomy is a user or people generated method for classifying content.  Commonly, tags are used to isolate keywords within content and bookmark them for future reference or to share with others and enable them to locate relevant information quickly.

The website - Folksonomies - Cooperative Classification and Communication Through Shared Metadata at http://www.adammathes.com/academic/computer-mediated communication/folksonomies.html describes 3 different types of information classification by professionals- library cataloguing, authors - the creator annotates their own work, or user created metadata - each user creates their own set of metadata and shares it with others who are interested.

User created metadata, or folksonomy,  is based more on  synthesis of similarity than  the systematic arrangement of materials in professional classification and documents can have many terms associated with them rather than being limited to just one term.
