What is the educational value of online mobile games
and mobile social network access?
Wi-Fi technology advantages for e-learning
Improving interest and access for many ‘digital natives’ (Prensky, 2001) by employing familiar and flexible modes of learning, e-learning develops 21st Century skills - problem solving, decision making, collaboration and teamwork through varied content methods such as simulations, games and social networking - effectively changing the face of both teaching and learning.
Using technology and these methods, to access learning across personal, local or world-wide networks, caters better for individual needs and learning styles. No boundaries of distance or time, means students have personal control over their learning.
Access to such learning opportunities depended on learners ‘plugging in’ to a network via network cable. Those with access to necessary infrastructure benefited and those for whom infrastructure was inaccessible were excluded. This ‘digital divide’[1] left many unable to make use of modern educational resources.
Wireless technology is changing that.
An example of this is the Ulwazi e-learning project in Pretoria, South Africa.
Wireless broadband technology enabled the creation of a learning community linking 5 schools -
“..to promote shared learning, cultural experiences and knowledge.” (Beyers, 2006)
Ability to share resources using a range of e-learning technologies showed increases of up to 15% in pupil achievement. Using wireless infrastructure overcame challenges of terrain and infrastructure, enabled access to reliable, fast, affordable broadband connectivity and allowed e-learning to benefit populations thought previously unreachable.
“We have now got access to all the information we need as well as educators to support us.
There is no reason to fail anymore.”
Pupil, Gatang High School, Pretoria, South Africa.
